Detecting Structural Foundation Cracks in the Edwardsville, Springfield, Greater St. Louis & O’Fallon Areas

Concrete slabs are often subject to the effects of evaporation, which can cause them to shrink and form hairline cracks. While this does not impact structural integrity, it may still allow for unwanted moisture or pests in your home – all potential problems that should be addressed accordingly. Midwest Basement Tech is your local structural repair expert serving Clayton, Chesterfield, Richmond Heights, Brentwood, Ladue, Glendale, Ballwin, Rock Hill, Olivette, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Wildwood, Des Peres, Clarkson Valley, Creve Coeur and nearby!

On the other hand, more serious issues could lie beneath these surface-level cracks: foundation movement brought about by wet soil pressing against walls or erosion weakening support underneath them could signal alarming complications if left unaddressed; swift investigation is necessary under such circumstances.

Which Direction?

If you have a horizontal structural crack, at least 90% of the time it means that the wall is bowing inward. If you see vertical cracks, they typically indicate a settling issue. Stair-step cracks can be an indication of either problem, possibly at the same time.

What’s The Size?

If it’s a hairline crack, it is probably just the result of the curing of the concrete. Wider cracks, cracks that are allowing water to seep into the basement, should be inspected and monitored by a professional even if they don’t pose any structural concerns.

What Causes Horizontal Cracks in the St. Louis & Springfield Areas?

We have a lot of clay in our soil. The biggest problem with clay is that when it rains, the clay soil soaks up 3-4 times its own weight in water. Even worse than that, when the clay soil becomes saturated, it actually expands. So if you have a pound of soil, that same soil becomes 3-4 pounds after the rainfall. As it saturates, you are tripling, if not quadrupling the weight up against the foundation wall; and on top of that, the soil expands after saturation causing extra pressure pushing on the foundation wall. Which is going to move first? Your 8″ foundation wall or the hundreds of yards of soil itself? Your foundation wall is going to crack, lean or bow! Something has to give.

Please do remember that if you see cracks or bulging walls inside your home, don’t try to fix these yourself! Instead, call Midwest Basement Tech, this is what we do every day!
