Concrete lifting is a method of repair often used when dealing with sinking or settling foundation floors. The method of lifting and whether it is possible to lift the floor will depend on the type of concrete floor you have and the underlying problem.

Different Type of Floors

There are different types of poured concrete floors. These floors have unique characteristics. The differences arise from the method of pouring.

  1. Slab on grade

This is one of the most common methods used for pouring concrete for foundation floors today. It is used to create a monolithic slab. The footers and the floor are poured at the same time creating a uniform foundation when the concrete dries.

  1. Floating slab floors

Cracks in these types of floors usually don’t result in structural problems.

  1. Supported slab floors

The footings in this case are poured earlier and a lip installed. The soil or gravel beneath the floor is tightly compacted. The floor is poured so that the edges rest on the footing lip.

These floors are not often affected by settlement especially when they have been reinforced. However, severe settlement may have an impact on the floor. They may also collapse when they are poorly reinforced.

Concrete Lifting of Floors

When poured concrete floors settle, they begin to crack. These cracks may continue to grow with further settling of the floor. Concrete lifting is necessary if the settlement cracks are larger than three and a quarter inches in width. Lifting may include:

  1. Mud jacking

This involves lifting the poured concrete slab by pumping polyurethane resins or low-strength concrete beneath the floor. The floor is raised as the volume of material pumped under the slab increases. This method is a great choice for homes built on stable soils or close to load-bearing rock.

  1. Slab jacking

This method is also known as grout pumping. It is used when the foundation is built on unstable soil or when the load bearing rock is deep. A special grout is injected under high pressure into the void that is below the floor.
