Common Causes of Basement Leaks in MO & IL

What causes basements to leak?

Basements leak when groundwater accumulates around the foundation walls. This is commonly due to clogged drain pipes and other types of failures of drainage systems.

The only effective way to prevent basement leaks and flooding is to prevent the ground around the foundation from becoming oversaturated with water.  The best way to fix a wet basement is to have a full-perimeter drainage system installed in your basement.

Here at Midwest Basement Tech, we provide homeowners with a custom-designed drainage system to suit their basement specifically. Installation is quick and efficient with our experienced crews. After installation, we offer fully transferable limited warranties.

French Drains
(the old-fashioned solution)

For over 100 years, “French Drains” or footing drains have been the builder’s preferred solution to groundwater control around foundation walls. A French drain is a line of clay or corrugated pipe installed around the exterior of the basement, by the footing. If your home is less than 100 years old, it most likely has a French Drain system in place. Yet, basements with French drains will, overtime, start to leak and flood because they eventually clog with silt, mud and debris. To fix a clogged drain pipe you would need to dig out the foundation up to the footing.

Interior Perimeter Drainage Systems Installed in Central Illinois, Greater St. Louis & Lake of the Ozarks

The MBT Water Control System is an under-slab interior foundation drainage system. It is designed to relieve hydrostatic pressure buildup under the slab, allowing water to travel through the system to the sump basin. When used with recommended options, the system will collect and remove water before it can enter your basement. The MBT Water Control System is a sealed system that works to keep out soil gases, such as radon, and excess moisture like humidity. This reduces the chances of microbial growth unlike traditional methods that create an opening (gap) around the edge of the basement floor that releases soil gases and moisture in to your home’s air creating an unhealthy environment. Midwest Basement Tech. gives you a dry and healthy basement for you and your family. Not all waterproofing systems are created alike. Do it correct with Midwest Basement Tech.

Advantages:

  • Lifetime transferable warranty
  • Relieves hydrostatic pressure before water reaches slab
  • Greater water intake capacity than traditional systems (moves 44 gallons per minute)
  • Serviceable system with clean out port -Sealed system that does not increase soil gases or humidity

    Recommended Options:

    1. Battery Backup Keeps sump pump operating during power outage.
    2. Wall Vapor Barrier Directs potential upper wall leaks into the system (highly recommended if walls will be finished).
    3. Dehumidifier Controls airborne moisture and maintains a humidity level to reduce the potential of microbial growth.

Sump Pumps Installed in Central Illinois, Greater St. Louis & Lake of the Ozarks

The heart of the waterproofing system is the sump pump. Once our drainage system collects groundwater, it is diverted to a sump pit. A sump pump will then pump the water out of your basement and discharge it away from the foundation. Call Midwest Basement Tech for a FREE Estimate in the St. Louis or Springfield areas!

    Battery Backup Systems

Traditional sump pumps rely on your home’s electricity to operate. Yet, what happens when a storm knocks down the power and your sump pump is off when you need it the most? A battery backup provides effective protection for your basement during power outages. It will automatically kick in when the power goes out and automatically charge when the power comes back on.
